This month we celebrate Independence Day on July Fourth, a day with fireworks, great food, and the gathering of family and friends to honor the spilled blood of our forefathers to create a nation considered the greatest on Earth. But even more precious than the blood of our fathers is the blood of our savior, whose sacrifice provided for us the ultimate freedom.
Revolutionaries founded a nation in which we have the freedom to be heard in a democratic republic fulfilling the people’s will. Indeed, this is a valuable and wonderful freedom. But our Lord Jesus provided entry into His wondrous kingdom where freedom is ultimate and complete.
He gave us freedom from the punishment for sin, the pursuit of worldly passions, and fear. He gave us the freedom to worship Him, to love one another, to choose life and not death. As written in John 8:36, if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. And we are.
We have gained independence from a harsh and cruel world, instead inhabiting a kingdom of grace and mercy, a kingdom of love and kindness. What a perfectly independent abode that is!
As you feast upon the bounty of a Fourth of July barbecue, honor the source of freedom that provides that wonderful meal. As you gaze at the sky watching explosive colors that mesmerize and enthrall, remember the true spectacle of heaven in all His glory and give thanks for his mercy and goodness. As you embrace family and friends, extend to them the love God freely extends to you.
Lord, we thank you for the freedom you have given to us, that was purchased by Your precious blood. Lead us into Your perfect will as we freely choose a life of worshiping You. To You be all the honor, all the praise, and all the glory. Amen.
