What it Means to be Salt & Light

Jesus used salt and light several times as metaphors referring to His followers. Salt was used for two things in the 1st Century Middle East.

First, salt preserved food, especially quick-spoiling meat. Similarly, believers preserve the lives of those in the world from inherent evil working within a society of unredeemed, ungodly men whose natures are corrupted by sin. (Psa 14:3; Rom 8:8). Second, salt enhances flavor. Christ’s followers “enhance” the flavor of life. Christians, guided by the Holy Spirit in obedience to Christ, influence the world for good, just as salt influences positively the flavor of food. We are peacemakers amid strife, ministers to those who sorrow, lovers in the midst of hatred, exemplifying the love of God in Christ, returning good for evil (Luke 6:35).

Like the sun shines its light brightly and illuminates the world, so also the good works of Christians should shine for all to see. Light in contrast to darkness is unmistakable. We are to be that light in the darkness, not only in that God’s Word of truth brings light to sinful, darkened hearts (John 1:1-10), but also in that our good deeds must be seen by all for God’s glory (Mat 5:16).

What things hinder us? Any choice to accept the world’s ways for comfort or convenience – or to neglect obedience to Christ – blurs the distinction between us and the world and pushes us in the wrong direction. Any time we fail to daily take up the cross and follow Christ wholeheartedly is a danger to our spirit. Only by remaining focused on and obedient to Christ can we remain salt and light in the world.

Lord, we bow humbly before You and ask Your Holy Spirit to guide us in all things to allow us to be the Salt & Light to the world you have called us to be. Let us flavor and illuminate the world for Your glory. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
