It seems sometimes my mind has a mind of its own. I try to pray, mind will stray. Try to study, brain goes muddy. Start to ponder, mind will wander. Begin to think, thoughts really stink. Sound familiar?
But it doesn’t have to be like that, and we cannot allow it. Thoughts shape our life and are the battleground for sin. Thoughts are also the key to peace and happiness. And no one else can control them except us, not even God. He’s given us free will. Pray for God to control your thoughts and He answers, “Those are your thoughts. You control them. But I’ll help by providing what you need to do it.”
Three enemies attack our Christian mind: 1) our old nature, 2) the world’s culture, and 3) Satan. Unbidden thoughts will plague an undisciplined way of thinking. But we have authority over these, and they can be overcome and managed by accepting the guidance of the Holy Spirit and submitting our independent will instead to truth, controlling those destructive thoughts.
Paul instructs, For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, (2Co 10:4-5 NKJ). Whose warfare? Ours. We pull down strongholds, which are lies we believe, and bring every thought into captivity. We do this using the Word of Truth. Fill your mind and heart with scripture then use these truths to defend against the lies of our three enemies attempting to infiltrate our minds. What we believe is what we become. Believe rightly.
Whatever you do, be smart enough to not believe everything you think.
Lord, help us discern between truth and fallacy, so we may wisely and effectively wield the weapons You have provided, pulling down strongholds in our minds and imprisoning false thoughts. Transform us as we change the way we think to align with Your holy thoughts. In Jesus name, Amen.
