March is chock-full of holidays ranging from National Pig Day on the 1st to National Pi Day (the number, not the dessert) on the 14th to my favorite National Goof-Off Day on the 22nd. But more importantly, March is a time of new beginnings and renewal. God decrees nature at this time to show off its new growth and colorful blooms.
But in truth, every day should be one of renewal as we advance in sanctification, guided by the Holy Spirit to cast aside the old self and put on the new, becoming that glorious creation in Christ we are called to be.
“Create in me,” the Psalmist says in 51:10, “a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”
We’re very familiar with the Spring Cleaning of our homes after a long winter of collecting unhealthy and unneeded things in our environment. We clear them out so our dwellings are not only cleaner, but we’ve made room for things more desirable.
Let’s do the same spiritually and invite the Holy Spirit to point out anything we might need to deodorize and disinfect. Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting! (Psa 139:23-24) Then celestial cleanser can remove the stubborn stain, and we can be shined a bit more with polish of perfecting.
It’s almost Spring. Get ready for increasing Son-shine.
Lord, search our innermost parts and show us where we need to invite Your deepest cleaning. Make us daily more like you as we continue in sanctification, being remade into Your image, casting aside the old and being always renewed. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
