Beyond Roses: Celebrating Agape on Valentine’s Day

Hearts, candy, and romance are on the minds of most as February 14th approaches. While Valentine’s Day emphasizes romantic love, the Bible invites us to celebrate a deeper, all-encompassing love: Agape.

Based on the Greek word for “unconditional love,” Agape transcends emotion. It’s the love God embodies—a love that gave rise to creation, sent Jesus to redeem humanity, and empowers us to love others selflessly.

So, how can we shift our focus to Agape this Valentine’s Day?

Remember the Source: Reflect on John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” This verse encapsulates the true essence of love, reminding us that our capacity to love stems from God’s immense love for us.

Spread the Agape: Perform acts of kindness towards friends, family, even strangers. Volunteer at church or a local charity, help a neighbor, send a heartfelt message expressing your appreciation.

Love Thy Neighbor: Reach out to someone difficult to love; a distant relative, a challenging co-worker, or someone with differing views. Extend compassion and understanding to embody the love taught by Jesus.

Love Yourself: Self-love, often neglected, is necessary for Agape to flourish. Take time to nourish your spirit, forgive yourself for past mistakes, and embrace your unique worth. God loves you unconditionally, and so should you.

Lord, help us celebrate and incorporate Agape, Your true form of love this Valentine’s Day, Help us focus on its principles and create ripples of compassion, kindness, and understanding desperately needed by this world, so we leave a lasting impact far beyond February 14th. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
