Arguably nothing in life is more challenging than being a Christian. Jesus turned the world system upside down and dared us to think and behave far differently than lessons taught by society.
We are to love our enemy. We are blessed when reviled and persecuted. When forced to go a mile, we are to willingly go two. If someone takes our clothing, we give them our jacket as well. We are to do good things in secret rather than in the sight of others. Do not seek to gather riches in this world, but instead store up treasures in an unseen place for an unknown time. We are to rejoice when grieved by various trials, for the outcome is worth the ordeal.
Jesus’ teachings challenge us in every way. And the ways of God are far above our incomplete understanding. These challenges can be emotional, intellectual, financial, physical, and certainly spiritual. In this time, most of us are facing challenges in all these areas. I believe God is challenging us to learn we do not need things we thought we did, that things we thought so important really are not, and that we can rely upon Him far more than any government or earthly authority. I believe He is challenging us to spend much more time with Him.
I urge you to re-read Matthew 5-7 (The Sermon on the Mount) then evaluate with the help of the Holy Spirit whether your life reflects these challenges of holiness as well as it should. God reforms us daily with the mind of Christ as He perfects us into His image. Sanctification is a constant and confrontational process—it ain’t easy—but with God you are far more than up to the challenge. Remember: I can do all things through him who strengthens me. (Phi 4:13)
Lord, thank you for this time of challenging me to become more holy and to strengthen my relationship with you. Grant me wisdom, understanding, and courage to be who You say I am for Your glory.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
