Celebrating Freedom

July is the month Americans celebrate freedom. Most people’s attention are turned to picnics, barbecues, and fireworks.

But as Christians, we should also celebrate freedom as well. And not only for a single day in July, but each moment of every day. For we are a new creation in Christ: Jesus has set us free from the law of sin and death. There is no greater freedom than that!

Brothers and sisters, is that not worthy of celebration? We have a much greater feast ahead of us than the most talented BBQ pit master could ever create. We will be specially invited guests at the marriage supper of the Lamb. Jesus will sit at the head of the table serving us the finest heaven has to offer. As far as fireworks, the heavens declare God’s majesty. And we will walk forever in his marvelous light, far brighter than the most explosive skyrocket Phantom Fireworks could ever manufacture.

But freedom comes with a price. The heroes of this nation risked and surrendered their lives for our liberty. Jesus willingly became the perfect sacrifice upon the rugged cross of Calvary and became the propitiation for our sins, paying the ultimate price for our eternal freedom. Let us celebrate and thank him unceasingly.

But there is an appropriate response accompanying this freedom we have been given.  For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. (Gal 5:13). We are to serve on another in love modeling the way Jesus loved and served us.

Lord, thank you for your gift of freedom. May I wisely thank you daily by serving others as you served me. May I bring glory and honor to your sacrifice, never ever forgetting.
