Change Isn’t, Until You Change

Greek philosopher Heraclitus of Ephesus was credited with saying (in paraphrase) that change is the only constant. He also said as quoted by Plato that you could not step twice into the same river. Change is life as crafted by God and a trait of His entire creation.

We refer to seasons of change, for that is what they truly are. They follow cyclical patterns. Spring once departed returns again following winter. History indeed repeats itself, but always with a unique twist that makes it individual in nature. Snowflakes fall in what seems infinite number, yet none are the same.

So it is with our lives and the orchestrated path God leads us through if we are obedient to His guidance. We have infinite freedom of choice. Yet, if we are righteous, our steps are ordered by the divine (see Psalm 37:23).

God also – as described in the person of Jesus Christ – is eternally unchanging. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Heb 13:8).

When we put these two concepts together, we have a God with an unchanging nature performing constantly changing acts. His characteristics of love and mercy, coupled with being ever-present, all-knowing, and all-powerful will never change. But through His infinite wisdom, He leads us into new and unfamiliar places requiring our faith when we allow Him to guide our steps.

Trust in God as you march into an unknown future. Although our future in the next eternal life is certain, our future in this mortal life is not – yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring… (Jam 4:14a). But we have one certainty: God is always there for us with a plan for our lives. And His plan is amazingly terrific.

Lord, we yield our steps to Your perfect plan as we forge ahead into an unknown future, knowing You will guide and provide for all our needs. We place our trust in You with the assurance that You have plans to prosper us, to give us a future and a hope. Lead us into Your divine will for our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
