The Prayer of Thanksgiving

In Colossians 4:2, Paul admonishes us to pray with conviction and to approach it with an attitude of watchfulness and thankfulness, expressing our gratitude to God for all He has done for us. We should acknowledge His goodness and sovereignty in our lives while reminding ourselves of all the wonderful things He has provided, both big and small.

Thankful prayer is important. First, as a way to worship God. When we thank Him for His blessings, we are acknowledging His greatness and His worthiness of praise. Second, thankful prayer helps us grow in gratitude. When we take the time to reflect on all the magnificent things God has done, it helps us appreciate His kindness even more. Third, thankful prayer can help us shift perspective in difficult times. When facing challenges, it’s easy to focus on our problems and to lose sight of the beneficial things in our lives. But when we take the time to thank God for our blessings, it can help us see we are still fortunate, even in the midst of our trials.

Be specific when thanking God. Don’t just thank Him for “everything”. Think about the specific blessings you have received, and thank Him for each individually. Instead of praying “Thank You for my family,” you might say, “Thank You for my loving husband/wife and supportive children.”

Above all, be honest. It’s okay to express your true feelings. God knows them anyway. But even if you’re struggling, you can still thank Him for His goodness and faithfulness, even in the midst of your pain.

And be consistent. Even a short prayer every day, taking time to thank God for His providence, will help you to grow in gratitude and appreciation.

Lord, thank You for the gifts You so freely give us, for our family, food, shelter, love, wisdom, and life. But most of all for our salvation for which You paid the ultimate price. I love you and am grateful. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
