We’ll Leave the Light on for You

Illumination in a biblical context is defined as spiritual or intellectual enlightenment. More simply, it is light given by God to overcome the darkness of sin that blinds the world. God would have us see His perfect truth rather than be deceived by the lies of Satan.

Jesus, before he ascended to heaven, promised a teacher who would give illumination from within. In John 16:13-14, Jesus said, “when the spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.” The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father (John 15:26) and proclaims the Son. He speaks to us the exact and unadulterated truth. He is the perfect teacher.

Each of us as believers has this Holy Spirit indwelling within us. Galatians 4:6 teaches, “And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts…” And remember through His spirit, “the LORD my God lightens my darkness.” (Psalm 18:28 ESV). The Holy Spirit guides us into all God’s truth, giving us understanding, inspiration, and interpretation. God’s spiritual truth is His free gift to His children if we are willing to accept it and do our part.

To hear the Holy Spirit’s instruction we should daily read and meditate on scripture, pray to the Father, listen to praise and worship music, and listen to people who are gifted in teaching and preaching. “And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,” (Ephesians 4:11-12).

Lord, thank you for Your Holy Spirit that guides me. Help me to  never forsake time to listen to the instruction I so desperately need to become what You created me to be. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
