Seasons Come, Seasons Go

Ecclesiastes 3:1 instructs us that For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: In addition to Acts 1:7, Jesus also told us in Mark 13:28 From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out it leaves, you know that summer is near. Combine these concepts and we gain understanding that while we have a sense of what is happening in our lives and the world around us based upon the season, God alone knows the precise details. We must perceive the season and respond appropriately, sowing at the proper time before reaping, but not harvesting while planting. Our actions must correspond to the time we are in. But God’s Providence determines the outcome.

Storms are likely in winter and sunshine dominates summer, but summer rain and warm winter days happen also in unending cycles, commanded by God’s infinite wisdom. While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.” (Gen 8:22 ESV). Warm spring days are comforting, but comfort also abounds spending a cold winter day in a snug house with a tummy warmed by cocoa or coffee. And that is the lesson—as bitter as the world may become, God provides a refuge of joy and protection within His loving arms. Regardless of pandemic or politics, gloom or grief, God’ greater plan carries us through every difficult season. Focus on Jesus instead of circumstances—truth not facts—and discern these cycles. God is eternally the same and brings us through all things, transforming trials into triumphs. So know the seasons, but trust in His wise purpose. You cannot change the sky or the sea, but you can weather any storm.

Lord, thank You for seedtime and harvest, that you lead us through enduring cycles of Your goodness. Give us wisdom both to discern the season and to respond according to Your perfect will.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
